Straw Free Smoothies

February 11, 2018

Well, I should say, plastic free anything and everything! Recently I became aware of how bad a plastic straw is for our environment. Turns out something so small can make a huge impact!

Plastic Free Chester

A few weeks ago I attended a Zero Waste Chester meeting with my friend Imogen to watch a documentary, Plastic Shores. At the meeting we found out about the Straw Free Chester Campaign, where Chester is bidding to be the first Straw Free City!

It’s estimated that the city uses 300,000 straws a day! These straws can take hundreds of years to break down and many of them find their way to our seas and oceans. 12 million tons of straws and other types of plastic waste enter the oceans every year. This plastic waste causes the death of up to 1,000,000 seabirds, 100,000 marine mammals and countless fish every year.

The aim of the campaign is for businesses and organisations in Chester to only give out a plastic drinking straw if a customer specifically asks for one, for every customer to only ask for a drinking straw if they really need one and for everyone to consider using paper or reusable drinking straws.

By simply going straw free or bringing your own metal straw, as photographed, you could make a huge impact!

Join the campaign and let me know if you’re doing something similar where you live!
